How these rankings are calculated
Rankings are sorted by the metric selected above — overall score, safety, schools or affordability — computed the same way for every suburb in our database, so the ordering reflects the underlying data rather than editorial judgement. Overall score is a weighted blend across all scored dimensions; each individual metric (e.g. safety) is scored independently on its own 0-100 scale.
Safety scores for South African suburbs are built from official SAPS crime statistics at police-precinct level, weighted toward violent and property crime categories. International safety scores use the equivalent national source — data.police.uk reports in the UK, BKA and Landeskriminalamt statistics in Germany, and CBS data in the Netherlands.
School scores weigh the number and proximity of nearby primary and secondary schools, drawn from the Department of Basic Education's National Masterlist; affordability compares typical rent against local median household income. Filter by country or province above to compare rankings within a specific region, or open any suburb to see the full seven-dimension breakdown behind its rank.
